How to replace the stock ignitor & coil with MSD 6A & AEM EMS. Mr2celica sw20 st205 st204

This is for 91-93 Toyota MR2's (SW20)
This theory could be applied to similar vehicles such as 93-99 celicas.

I wrote this about a year ago on MR2oc.com to help the members remove the stock ignitor and coil and replace them with an MSD 6A unit. This can only be done if you have an aftermarket ecu, such as AEM EMS. So here it is, I hope this help anyone who find it.

Just like the diagram states, you need to move the jumper inside the AEM unit. It's JPC1, it has three pins in a row with a jumper that jumps two of the three pins together.
The jumper can only be set 2 ways, so just set it the opposite way from they way it was when you opened the unit up. To get into the unit you need to take out a small allen head screw that locks the board in place, just make sure you put it back in after your done and don't loose it because it is quite small. I suggest soldering and shrink wrapping every connection.

If you have any questions leave me a comment on here.

  1. hi. i just saw that you told how to hook up MSD and AEM ECU to a sw2o mr2 with the 3S-GTE motor. im having the same situation of being confused on how to hook everything up so it all works. the only difference is instead of buying the MSD 6A control box i instead bought the new 6A-2 box that just came out a few months ago. my question to you is do you know how all the wiring should be hooked up and do you have a wiring diagram for this setup? i hope you might be able to help me out but if not then thats ok. thanks, Aron.
